Episode 8: Michael Flores

Hello,

Here is one I came across going through Unsolved Mysteries Wiki and just perplexes me.

Watch Episode 8 on YouTube.

Michael Flores was a 15 and a 10th grader in Rio Hondo High School in Texas. He was interested in the computerized part of mechanics. He was from a well-known family and was described as being a good boy.

On September 26, 1988, Michael Flores returned to his home from watching his sister’s band practice. His mother stated that he was really optimistic and had decided what he wanted to be when he grew up that very day. They had this talk and then around 9:30 pm, he went into his bedroom to listen to the radio. He did have the radio turn up full blast in which his mother did tell him to turn it down. You know as mothers do and he did.

A few minutes after this while his family was watching television in the living room. They heard what they initially thought was a firework going off since that was a normal occurrence in the alley near their house. That was until they hear a thump coming from Michael’s bedroom. They rushed to his bedroom to find him slumped over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Here are some facts about the murder

  • He was found on his knees, face down in a pillow.

  • The bullet struck him from behind on the right side of his head and lodge itself on the right side of his forehead.

  • The shot came from the open window and they found where the bullet pierced the screen.

  • They believe the person was standing approximately 13 to 14 feet from his window.

  • He has shot with a.357 Magnum, which has never been found. They weren’t even able to find an empty bullet casing.

  • There weren’t many clues that were found at the crime scene.

  • A small brown car was seen leaving the area immediately after the shooting.

  • Based on Google Maps I’m assuming Michael was in the room closest to the street. The home sits right on the corner at a 4-way intersection of 2 cross streets.

Suspects

  • There was one person of interest, but there wasn't enough evidence to bring about any charges.

Including this one there were 11 other murders by Gunshot. All of them were within an hour’s drive of where Michael lived. These were from April 88 to March 93. Including Michael, there were 12 that were identified. Only 4 of them I was able to find any information on Google. I don’t know if there is a connection or anything. I just thought it was strange when I came across the Rio Project Cold Case page (I’ve linked below) and noticed so many unsolved gunshot murders. I have posted were written upon the other 3 I could find information on. There were 6 unknown murders as well, but I’m not sure of the Cause of Death on those.

There wasn’t a lot of this is literally all the information I have been able to find on this case.

This case is listed as one of the Rangers' top 12 cold case investigations.
There is currently a $6000 reward for this one. If you have any information about the case, call Texas Crime Stoppers at 1-800-252-8477.

Fried Green Tomatoes

INGREDIENTS

  • green tomatoes

  • buttermilk

  • egg or egg replacer (I used Bob Mill’s)

  • cornmeal

  • all-purpose flour

  • garlic powder

  • bread crumbs or Panko, I used Italian panko bread crumbs.

  • pepper

  • salt

  • Vegetable or Canola oil

Now that we have a list of what’s needed here is how to use them to make them.

  1. Pick your favorite eye on the cooktop and turn it to medium heat. Pour in your chosen oil to start heating up.

  2. Mix together the dry ingredients in one bowl and wet in another. I eyeballed it all and measured with my heart.

  3. Cut the Tomato in medium slices, if they are too thick they won’t cook right and if they are too thin they will be too limp.

  4. Dip the tomatoes in the wet mix then dip in the dry ingredients to coat them completely.

  5. Put them in the heated up oil and cook until you see the edges turn a light brown then flip and cook till the other side is brown.

  6. Once it’s done I put them on a paper toweled plate to absorb any excess grease.

  7. Wait until they cool down, so you don’t burn yourself, then Enjoy!
