This is one from. Unsolved Mysteries back in the day, which I vividly remember watching and it always stuck with me.

I couldn’t find a whole lot of information on this one.

Michael Hunter was a 31-year-old motorcycle racer and mechanic at Honda Kawiski in Oakland California. He studied engineering at Merritt College. He was a popular member of the Eastbay Motorcycle Crowd. He had apparently survived hundreds of dangerous competitions.

On February 24th, 1992. Michael took his bike out for a ride and was murdered. Let me start with a Timeline of Events before we get into the details of his death.

  • 7:45 PM- Michael left to go for a ride.

  • 7:48 PM- he stopped at an ATM half a mile away and withdrew $20 from his checking account, a security camera recorded the transaction. This was caught on an ATM security camera.

  • 7:55 PM- went to a liquor store, half a block from the ATM, where he bought a pint of whiskey later found in his jacket.

  • 8:33 PM: collapsed at the gas station in Emeryville

  • 9:00 PM: pronounced Dead

The last few moments of Michael's life are unknown. He was spotted weaving in an erratic way and hunched over his motorcycle as he pulled into a local gas station. It was here that he fell to the ground unconscious. Police and paramedics were dispatched to the scene. They initially thought it was a motorcycle accident but there wasn’t any blood or injuries that are typical with motorcycle accidents. His pulse was faint and he was barely alive. At the time he was unknown to anyone since his wallet was missing and was taken to a local hospital.

It was when it made it to the hospital that it was discovered he had been shot three times by a small caliber weapon.

  • One of the bullets shattered his knee.

  • A second lodged in his abdomen.

  • The third and fatal bullet punctured his aorta.

The wounds were nearly invisible but had resulted in massive internal bleeding. He never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead shortly after 9:00 PM.

Police looked for anything that could be a reason for this murder.

  • During the mid-1980s, He competed in races throughout California. According to his mother Beverly, Michael earned a reputation as one of the area’s top cyclists. Friends state that he got a thrill from racing.

  • The police believe that Michael headed to a frontage road, which was three miles from the gas station. This area was known for its breathtaking view of the Bay Bridge. While there they think someone attempted to rob him and take his bike. So he drove off in an attempt to outrun the bullets.

  • He wasn’t known to have any enemies.

Michael’s friends and family have raised a $10,000 reward for information that may help solve this case.
